School Is Ending – What Do I Do With My Instrument?

As we near the end of the school year, one of the questions on a band parent’s mind is, “What do we do with my student’s instrument?” There are a couple of answers to this, but we can help you answer them.

First, you need to find out if your student plans to play again next year. If the answer to this is “yes” then you don’t need to do anything. Your student will bring the instrument home on the last day of school. This will give them the ability to play it all summer long. There are many online resources that they can utilize to make their playing even better while they are at home. The best part about it is that you student will be able to play whatever music they choose and they will go back in the fall an even better player than they were at the end of May.

If your student has decided that they are not going to participate in the music program next year, we make getting their instrument back to use easy as well. Here is a video that explains exactly how to get it back to us.

And as always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Do You Buy Used Instruments? – FAQs

Another frequently asked question we get is "Do you buy used instruments?"

We often buy back used instruments, but we don’t buy back everything. Before you bring your instrument in the store, here are a few things to know:

1. There is no guarantee that we can make an offer to buy your instrument. Our offers are contingent upon many factors, including:

  • Repair condition, as determined by our technicians
  • Age of the instrument
  • Make and model of the instrument (ie, has the model been discontinued?)
  • Current store inventory levels

2. If we are able to make an offer on your instrument, please note that it will be a wholesale price. Similar to trading a car in to a dealer as opposed to selling to a private party, we can not offer the full market value of the instrument. As a general rule, our offers may only be about 50% of the current market value.

3. We may also take into account necessary repair work, cleaning, or other refurbishments that must be done to put the instrument in sellable condition. These deductions will also be reflected on any offers.

4. To sell an instrument to us, you must be at least 18 years old, and we must be able to verify that you or someone in your family is the original owner of an instrument that originally came from Paige’s Music

5. If we make an offer on your instrument, a valid photo ID is required at the time of purchase.

6. No cash can be given for instrument buy-backs. All payments will be made via check, to be mailed to your address within 7-10 business days.

7. If we are able to make a purchase offer for your instrument, you will be given an offer sheet that is valid for 30 days. If you choose to take the instrument back home to sell elsewhere, you may return within 30 days to sell the instrument to us if you keep this offer sheet and present it at the time of sale. After 30 days, our technicians will reassess the instrument for possible purchase, and your offer may change.

As always, please call us first before you come in. If we’re not interested in the particular instrument you have, it could save you a trip.

Do You Do Instrument Appraisals? – FAQs

We often get asked if we do appraisals on wind and percussion isntruments. We don’t have a certified appraiser on our staff, but we can give you some information that might help you out.

Popular Brands and Models

The closest unofficial appraisal we can do is on a brand and model that we currently carry. We would ask that you either bring the instrument to our store or send it in with one of our District Managers on their weekly visit. We would then have our repair staff evaluate what kind of repairs it would need (if any) and then we could tell you what we would sell that instrument for if it were part of our inventory. This process would give you a market value of what the asking price might be for your instrument if you were to try and sell it on your own.

Brands and Models We Don’t Carry

If your instrument isn’t a brand and model that we carry, then we could still have our repair shop evaluate it for repairs, which is always good to know when selling an instrument. However, we would have a harder time giving you a good idea of an accurate selling price. We do, however, have access to a "blue book" for instruments where we would could look up a value for your brand and model.

Please Call First

It’s worth gathering some information first before you come and visit us. Most of the time an accurate assessment of your instrument requires a repair technician to see it in person. However, your situation might be such that we can give you all the information you need over the phone. It’s certainly worth the time to call us first.

The deadline for each school is a certain day and time. You can find that information on our delivery page.

How Do I Send My Instrument In For Repair – FAQs

Sending an instrument into Paige’s Music for repair is a very easy process. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Call us at 1-800-382-1099 to let us know that your instrument needs service. We’ll arrange for a loaner to be sent to your school so your student isn’t without an instrument for class.

TIP: You’ll need to keep your mouthpiece, bow, reeds, and cleaning items with you so that you’ll have them to use with the loaner until your instrument is returned to you.

2. Our District Manager will bring the loaner with him on his next visit to your school. He will also pick up your instrument and bring it back to the store for servicing. Most of the time your instrument will be returned to you the following week.

TIP: Make sure you take your mouthpiece, bow, reeds, and cleaning supplies out of the loaner and put them back i your original case once your instrument has returned to your school.

You can also do this online.

1. Go to our website at www.paigesmusic.com

2. Scroll down and click on “Service Request”

3. Fill in the form and click on the blue “Submit” button

TIP: If you fill this form out after our store hours and we visit your school the next day, there’s a very good chance that we won’t have your loaner with us. If possible, try to make these requests before we close the night before.

When do we visit your school? Find out here!

As always, if you have any questions or experience any problems along the way, please contact us at
