Should I Lubricate The Tenon Joint On My Woodwind Instrument – FAQs

One of the questions we get quite frequently is “Should I lubricate the tenon joints on my woodwind instrument?”

If the tenon has a cork, then yes, it should be lubricated with cork grease.

If the tenon has a cork, then yes, it should be lubricated with cork grease.

If the tenon joint has a cork then YES it should be lubricated with cork grease. Just a small amount will do from time to time. Too much can cause the cork to fail. (most clarinets, some piccolos and flutes, oboes)

If the tenons are metal-to-metal (like a flute), then no, they should not be lubricated.

If the tenons are metal-to-metal (like a flute), then no, they should not be lubricated.

If there is no cork and therefore is metal to metal then it should NOT be lubricated. Then tenons are designed to be a slip fit and work without lubrication. They sometimes become damaged, out of round or just become worn and need to be properly re-fit. If you try and use lubrication it will eventually pick up some dirt or a metal fragment and when you put it together can cause serious damage to the tenon. They do need to be cleaned off from time to time by just wiping them off with a clean cloth. If you experience a problem with this type of tenon you need to send it in for repair. (saxophones, bass clarinets, flutes, piccolos)

School Is Ending – What Do I Do With My Instrument?

As we near the end of the school year, one of the questions on a band parent’s mind is, “What do we do with my student’s instrument?” There are a couple of answers to this, but we can help you answer them.

First, you need to find out if your student plans to play again next year. If the answer to this is “yes” then you don’t need to do anything. Your student will bring the instrument home on the last day of school. This will give them the ability to play it all summer long. There are many online resources that they can utilize to make their playing even better while they are at home. The best part about it is that you student will be able to play whatever music they choose and they will go back in the fall an even better player than they were at the end of May.

If your student has decided that they are not going to participate in the music program next year, we make getting their instrument back to use easy as well. Here is a video that explains exactly how to get it back to us.

And as always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Do You Do Instrument Appraisals? – FAQs

We often get asked if we do appraisals on wind and percussion isntruments. We don’t have a certified appraiser on our staff, but we can give you some information that might help you out.

Popular Brands and Models

The closest unofficial appraisal we can do is on a brand and model that we currently carry. We would ask that you either bring the instrument to our store or send it in with one of our District Managers on their weekly visit. We would then have our repair staff evaluate what kind of repairs it would need (if any) and then we could tell you what we would sell that instrument for if it were part of our inventory. This process would give you a market value of what the asking price might be for your instrument if you were to try and sell it on your own.

Brands and Models We Don’t Carry

If your instrument isn’t a brand and model that we carry, then we could still have our repair shop evaluate it for repairs, which is always good to know when selling an instrument. However, we would have a harder time giving you a good idea of an accurate selling price. We do, however, have access to a "blue book" for instruments where we would could look up a value for your brand and model.

Please Call First

It’s worth gathering some information first before you come and visit us. Most of the time an accurate assessment of your instrument requires a repair technician to see it in person. However, your situation might be such that we can give you all the information you need over the phone. It’s certainly worth the time to call us first.

We’ve talked before about how to order supplies from us and get them delivered free to your school. However, we failed to mention how far ahead of time you need to contact us to ensure the quickest delivery.

The deadline for each school is a certain day and time. You can find that information on our delivery page.

The video below shows how to use the school delivery tool on our delivery page.
