Welcome back to Paige’s of History! This week we’ll examine 1990-2005. This period was marked with several mergers in the music industry and the rise of several BOO-tique manufacturers.

In 1990 Yamaha launched the Xeno series of trumpets. This was a game changer in trumpet manufacturing. Yamaha revolutionized the manufacturing processes and tonal concepts of modern trumpet playing and is now one of the most respected trumpet makers around.

Following the opening of the Soviet Union economy, McDonald’s opened their first Soviet location.

Qian Ni (Shen Nee) founded the Eastman Music Company in 1992, a revolutionary maker of string instruments– that has since expanded to band instruments, as well as acquiring several BOO-tique instrument makers.

For the first time, National Standards for Arts Education were developed in 1994. They describe what a child with a complete, sequential education in the arts should know and be able to do at various grade levels in each artistic discipline.

With origins in his humble repair shop, Steve Shires founded S.E. Shires in 1995. What started as a custom Trombone shop, S.E. Shires has since expanded to high end Trumpets and Euphoniums. That same year, The Selmer Company acquires the Steinway Piano Company.

In 1997, Paige’s Music moved to its current building in the Schmoll Business Park. The larger building allowed for an expanded showroom, in-house repair facilities, and eventually- several specialty shops. Two years later, Mark Goff purchased Paige’s Music from Warner Paige the Third.

The 2000 Presidential Election was one for the history books with the election taking more than a month to be called– until a Supreme Court decision led to the election of George W. Bush. Less than a year into his presidency, the September 11 attacks occur in New York City, Washington D.C., and Somerset County Pennsylvania.

The first major global sporting event to occur after the attacks was the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 30, 2001. This was a moment that showed American resolve on a global scale.

In October 2001, Apple unveiled the very first iPod—allowing music enthusiasts to take their music library wherever they go!

That same year, Morie Backun (Buh-koon) opened a small repair shop in Vancouver, British Columbia which eventually became renowned clarinet maker Backun Musical Services.

In 2002, United Musical Instruments (UMI) merged with The Selmer Company to form Conn-Selmer, Inc., a subsidiary of Steinway Musical Instruments, Inc.
