Josh’s Picks: 5 Trumpet Players to Check Out

With summer in full swing, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my favorite trumpet players to listen to!

Ingrid Jensen- Ingrid is an incredible jazz artist! She showcases the full range of the trumpet and has an incredible sound. Her recordings showcase a wide variety of jazz genres so if you are looking for some improvisation inspiration then look no further!

Brandon Ridenour- Brandon is currently a member of the Canadian Brass and has created some incredible arrangements for solo trumpet and brass quintet. If you haven’t heard his arrangement of Rhapsody in Blue, then please stop what you are doing and go look it up! He has an incredible sound and impeccable musicianship.

Joe Burgstaller- Joe is one of my former teachers and a current mentor. As a virtuoso artist, Joe showcases the trumpet in ways that many artists cannot. He is one of my favorite artists to listen to regarding tone quality, musicianship, and technique.

Tine Thing Helseth- Tine Thing quickly became one of my favorite artists about ten years ago. I have been able to hear her group Ten Thing live, and it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to! She is a virtuosic trumpeter that also plays with musicality and phrasing that can’t be matched. She also has some jazz recordings on YouTube that are worth a listen!

Wynton Marsalis- Wynton is one of, if not the, greatest trumpet players on the planet. His Jazz at Lincoln Center ensemble is one of the premier jazz groups in the world. Early in his career, Wynton was sought after as a classical trumpeter as well as a jazz artist. His recordings of the Haydn and Hummel Concerti are used as examples for students today. If you haven’t heard his early classical recordings alongside his many jazz records, please go listen!

Feel free to reach out and let me know your favorite artists and one of these week’s we’ll do a fan favorite list! Send your favorite artist along with a brief description to jganger@paigesmusic.com.
