Top 5 Reasons To Play The Trumpet
Yes, it’s that time of year again. Students all throughout the country are trying out instruments and deciding which one is right for them. Within this blog, I will give you the top 5 reasons to choose the trumpet! For the record, there is some satire involved in this blog. As a true trumpet player, I must say that there are many more reasons to choose the trumpet, but we’d run out of space within this blog.
1: You Get to Play High Notes- You may ask, why would this be listed as a reason? Well, because it’s a lot of fun! Getting to sit in the back of band class having high note battles with your classmates is a blast (both literally and figuratively). Yes, every instrument can play high, but the trumpet section is known for these epic high note battles. So, are you ready to join the fight for the peak of the trumpet range? If so, trumpet is the instrument for you! Yes, it’s that time of year again. Students all throughout the country are trying out instruments and deciding which one is right for them. Within this blog, I will give you the top 5 reasons to choose the trumpet! For the record, there is some satire involved in this blog. 2. Leading The Charge- In a more serious note, the trumpet is known as the leader of the brass section. Yes, everyone within the brass section has their own opportunity to shine. But, in most cases, the trumpets lead the section when there are epic moments. Think about your favorite film score, symphony, or band piece where the brass section is featured, usually the trumpets have the melody. So, if you want to lead the charge and help your brass section be epic, pick the trumpet!
3. It’s Relatively Small- Yes, size matters. I grew up as a shorter kid so choosing tenor saxophone or euphonium wouldn’t have worked out well for me. The trumpet is light and easier to carry! Plus, if you get an upgraded instrument through Paige’s Music (shameless plug), you can get a trumpet that has a case with backpack straps! Not only will you be the coolest kid in school walking the halls with an epic trumpet. But now you can wear it on your back. I don’t think there is a better fashion statement than carrying a trumpet case on your back like a backpack!
4. 3 Buttons- If you look at the different woodwind options, you may wonder, “Why are there so many buttons?” Well, with the trumpet, there are only 3! Learning fingerings for notes is a breeze compared to other instruments. While your classmates may struggle to memorize their scales, you’ll quickly figure out the sequence and be miles ahead of the rest of your class! It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!
5. It Is Not Expensive- You may ask why I would include this on my list. Well, this was the reason why I chose the trumpet. I remember well, I was an elementary student in Elkhart, Indiana trying out the alto saxophone and the trumpet. I was able to get a good sound out of both, so the instrument advisor asked me which one I wanted to choose. Without hesitation I asked, “which one is cheaper?” He responded by saying the trumpet is the cheaper option. Well, the rest is history. I went on to study music in college, get a Master’s and Doctorate degree in Trumpet Performance while traveling the world playing trumpet. Was it cheaper than the saxophone? Maybe, but I do currently own 6 different trumpets.
